Powder Room Vanity Countertops

During the 18th Century, a powder room referred to a tiny room where people went to have their wigs re-powdered. Powder rooms were still used through the Victorian period as well, but the definition of powder room changed to mean a general bathroom. Women would discretely excuse themselves from company by going to “powder their noses” in the powder room. Though the uses for a powder room have changed over time, the exclusive privacy they provide has remained the same.

Powder rooms in today’s homes offer a myriad of design possibilities. Unlike historical powder rooms, they can include design elements of furniture such as decorative vanities. Vanities offer storage space for towels and other toiletries. However, they can also serve as a design statement.

In the Asian-inspired powder room pictured above, the stained cherry wood countertop does both. Teakwood Builders designed the vanity to balance with the dark wall trim, although a custom edge profile on the countertop makes the vanity stand out.
