Farmhouse style kitchens can take many forms — from dressy and elegant, simple and modern, rustic and primitive, French or American. There are, however, a few must-have elements that a design requires in order to give it that farmhouse feel.
Farmhouse kitchen designs are unpretentious and tend to incorporate mostly natural, organic materials. Kitchens are also typically designed to accommodate cooking large meals. It is for all of these reasons — and many more — that wood countertops are included in farmhouse kitchen designs.
According to HGTV, high quality woods are often the first choice for seating and dining options in farmhouse kitchens. Tables are often classic wood “farm tables”—long planks of oak or other high-quality woods fitted closed and sturdily together. Wood countertops have been crafted of all different species, shapes, and sizes for farmhouse kitchens.

This elegant farmhouse kitchen designed by Artisan Kitchen and Bath captures southern charm at its finest. Expanded corners were added to the Walnut kitchen island countertop to highlight the columns in the cabinetry.
A Reclaimed Oak wood countertop gives this new kitchen designed by Monica Miller of J.S. Brown & Co. charisma beyond its youthful age. The farmhouse look is accomplished through floating shelves that compliment the wood countertop, white subway tile, a vintage super market sign, and decorative letter wall decor.
Chip Tiber, CKD, NCDIQ, of Studio 76 Kitchens & Baths designed this classy kitchen to feature a distressed Walnut wood kitchen island with a farmhouse sink. The metal hood, pendant lights, and stools add an industrial flair.
