Walnut Wood Half Pastore Table for Wellborn Cabinet KBIS 2017 display

About the Design: Creativity was used to balance the design of this vignette, establishing a modernistic masterpiece. Parallel in design between the top upper cabinets and the wooden section of the peninsula, there is a continuous line across the top of the cabinetry corresponding with the stainless-steel bar running laterally along the way. This cutting-edge kitchen is stylish, yet functional in nature.

Making a peninsula, the Pastore™ Table is the focal point of this design. Each side of the peninsula features push to open cabinets to store large pots and pans. The kids’ corner, located on the rear of the piece, creates a play area low to the ground for children to enjoy.

Oil Finished Walnut Countertop designed by TruKitchens

Our Custom Wood Countertops Blog features the industry’s most talented and innovative designers throughout the United States and abroad. This featured kitchen includes an Oil Finished Walnut Countertop designed by Todd Wiley, Senior Designer, TruKitchens.

Oil Finished Walnut Countertop designed by Todd Wiley, Senior Designer, TruKitchens
Todd Wiley, Senior Designer of TruKitchens

About the Designer: Todd Wiley, TruKitchen’s Senior Designer, has been working in the industry for the past 25 years.  His passion ignited in college when he started working for a builder and cabinet shop owner.  Realizing that he had to immerse himself in the industry to learn, he took a job at local shop on the Lake Michigan shoreline. As his passions grew, he moved on to Standard Kitchen Distributors where he continued to master the trade. This experience gave him the exposure to the systems and process that he was searching for. Feeling like there was more to learn on the design-end of the business, Todd then spent 7 years at a Cascade based design shop. For him, this experience gave him what he needed to further pursue his passion and open his own design shop, which is where he is today.

A Tip from Todd: “The client was looking to maximize counter space to accommodate multiple cooks in the kitchen as they like to entertain often. The homeowner had a completely different kitchen design in mind when they first came to us that didn’t take advantage of the space that was occupied by a window seat. By bumping up the window seat to convert it into a bay window, we added a second sink and more prep space. Also to avoid seams in the stone but also allow for a large island, an inverted an L-shaped slab of natural quartzite was paired with a custom L-shaped walnut with oil finish wood countertop.”

1 in 4 Homeowners Combine Kitchen Countertop Materials

According to Houzz, 1 in 4 homeowners combine two or more kitchen countertop materials when renovating their kitchens. Custom wood countertops are often paired with marble, engineered quartz, quartzite, granite and metal countertops. A popular design choice is to include a wood countertop in a food preparation area while using a metal or stone countertop for perimeter countertops. Another design used often is to select a stone, like marble or quartz, for the kitchen island countertop and select a wood countertop for the seating area.

Design Inspiration for Mixing Kitchen Countertop Materials

Taking ques from some of the best designers in the industry, here is some design inspiration for mixing kitchen countertop materials.

Combining Zinc and White Oak Wood Kitchen Countertop Materials
Zinc and Zebrawood Kitchen Countertops

For this traditional chef kitchen with two kitchen islands, Venegas and Company, Boston chose a Zinc countertop for the seating area as well as a White Oak wood countertop for the food preparation work space. Photography by Michael J Lee.

Combining Persa Avorio Leathered Granite and Wenge Wood Kitchen Countertop Materials
Persa Avorio Leathered Granite and Wenge Kitchen Countertops

Persa Avorio Leathered Granite countertops were chosen for the perimeter countertops and kitchen island. Designer Kate Connolly of Homestead Kitchens then selected a Wenge butcher block for the kitchen island end. The butcher block creates a perfect food preparation work space and adds a layer of texture to the kitchen.

Combining Polished Marble and Zebrawood Kitchen Countertop Materials
Polished Marble and Zebrawood Kitchen Countertops

A kitchen designed by Karen Kassen, CMKBD, ASID, of Kitchens Unlimited features a Zebrawood Pastore™ Waterfall Countertop. Polished Marble countertops flank the perimeter of the kitchen.

Combining Quartzite Tempesta and Reclaimed Chestnut Wood Kitchen Countertop Materials
Quartzite Tempesta and Reclaimed Chestnut Kitchen Countertops

Alicia Saso, AKBD, of Drury Design Kitchen & Bath Studio chose a Reclaimed Chestnut counter for a raised kitchen bar top. In addition, Quartzite Tempesta was selected for the kitchen island and perimeter countertops.

Custom Wood Countertops designed for Laundry Rooms

Custom Wood Countertops designed for Laundry Rooms for extra counter space
Custom Wood Countertops designed for Laundry Rooms

Custom wood countertops are designed for use in many rooms throughout the home, including laundry rooms. They can be designed for the wash station area or for extra counter space. Wood countertops provide a naturally warm surface for folding and switching the wash. Some designers choose to combine an integrated mudroom and laundry room. For integrated spaces like that, a wood bench seat is often crafted for a warm place to sit.

African Mahogany Counters for a Laundry Room

Collaborative Interiors designed this Seattle, Washington laundry room to include an African Mahogany wood countertop above the washer and dryer. Also designed was an African Mahogany bench seat for the built in cabinetry on the parallel wall. The warm, red tones of the wood compliment the cabinetry in the wash station area, as well as the wood ceiling beam.

Standing out against the white wall of paneling and cabinetry, the counter makes for the perfect area to fold and stack clothing. It also provides extra counter space for laundry related items to be in reach.

A bright laundry room with lots of efficiency was designed for this Hawaiian home. Archipelago Hawaii designed a countertop to run the entire length of the wall, offering plenty of counter space to complete laundry-related tasks. This large laundry room also offers an expansive run of custom cabinetry.

Powder Room Vanity Countertops

During the 18th Century, a powder room referred to a tiny room where people went to have their wigs re-powdered. Powder rooms were still used through the Victorian period as well, but the definition of powder room changed to mean a general bathroom. Women would discretely excuse themselves from company by going to “powder their noses” in the powder room. Though the uses for a powder room have changed over time, the exclusive privacy they provide has remained the same.

Powder rooms in today’s homes offer a myriad of design possibilities. Unlike historical powder rooms, they can include design elements of furniture such as decorative vanities. Vanities offer storage space for towels and other toiletries. However, they can also serve as a design statement.

In the Asian-inspired powder room pictured above, the stained cherry wood countertop does both. Teakwood Builders designed the vanity to balance with the dark wall trim, although a custom edge profile on the countertop makes the vanity stand out.

Vawn Greany and Trisha Gaffney of Collaborative Interiors designed Sapele Mahogany wood countertop to serve as the vanity for a vessel sink. The simple color palette mixed with the rich colors of the wood create a statement.

Each component of this powder room only reaches its full potential when combined with all the components as a whole. The lovely wallpaper has flecks of colors that pick up the balance of design elements and the bright red vanity base adds a vibrant pop of color. The American Beech wood vanity top is accented with the bright and neutral tones of the wall paper.
