About the 125″ Walnut Butcher Block Countertop

Custom Walnut Butcher Block Countertop designed for a Large White Kitchen Island
125″ Walnut Butcher Block Countertop

The large kitchen island is complete with this 125″ walnut butcher block countertop. At 2 1/2″ thick and 55″ in depth this end grain butcher block is ready for some serious food preparation. In addition, it provides the perfect place for everyone to gather, while still leaving the chef, or chefs, plenty of room to still prepare.

Walnut is one of the most popular wood species selected for kitchen countertops. Walnut is a prized cabinetmaking wood, noted for its beautiful, slightly open and  straight grain. It can also show a wave or curly figure. Walnut is hard and tough,  which gives it moderate crushing and bending strength, as well as medium stiffness. Finished with Grothouse Original Oil™, this Walnut butcher block can be sanded and oiled to look like new after many uses.

Green Kitchen Cabinets with Wood Countertops

Shades of green inevitably evoke growth, renewal and life. Green kitchen cabinets were popular last year, and the trend remains popular in 2019. It was seen in booths throughout KBIS 2019. There was a wide range of shades, from soft sage to emerald to moody teal.

Green is one of the colors that are loved by many because it’s very relaxing and calming. Green is a color of nature, and there are many shades you can opt for. To take it a step further, designers often pair green kitchen cabinets with wood countertops. Wood is an organic material sourced straight from nature. The combination of green and wood create a naturally inviting space. What follows are lively, inspiring kitchens in various shades of green kitchen cabinets with wood countertops.

To us, Reclaimed wood countertops will always be in. Reclaimed wood fits the minimalist trend for the new year, adding just enough character to any kitchen design with its natural imperfections. We offer a variety of reclaimed wood species, like Chestnut and Oak.

2019 Countertop Trends Butcher Block Countertops for Kitchens crafted by Grothouse
Design by Julie Cavanaugh of Design Matters

Butcher block countertops by Grothouse are custom wood countertops crafted in end grain construction style. End grain construction style is the kindest to knives and keeps them sharp. In addition, butcher block countertops tend to be self-healing and most knife marks disappear after cleaning. After years of use, they can be sanded and re-oiled to look like new again. They require very little maintenance, as they only need to be oiled when they appear dry. Their functionality and natural beauty is what makes them a continuous trend in kitchens and other spaces year after year.

Our exclusive Durata® waterproof permanent finish is predicted to be requested in the matte sheen. Matte finishes are said to be used throughout kitchens in the new year, from cabinetry to appliances; and we don’t see why that wouldn’t apply to countertops as well. Wood countertops with a matte finish have a forever-cool allure that is certain to never go out of style.

Butcher Block Knife Slots

Butcher block knife slots are a popular feature selected for kitchen counters. Knife slots are built-in knife storage custom crafted into a wood butcher block countertop.

Butcher Block Knife Slots for easily accessible knife storage and organization
Butcher Block Knife Slots

The term “butcher block” is used by Grothouse when referring to wood countertops built in end grain construction style. End grain is the premium construction style and our recommended surface for food preparation. Knives stay sharper longer when used on butcher blocks because the knife blades slide between the wood fibers, much like cutting into a firm brush. An additional benefit is that butcher blocks don’t show knife marks as readily as wood countertops crafted in edge grain or flat grain construction. Knife slots can be integrated into a butcher block crafted out of any wood specie available at Grothouse.

Knife slots free counter space by eliminating the need for a knife block. They are designed so that knives are easily accessible, but also safely tucked away so that young children cannot reach them.

Knife slots take many different forms, from a single slot to a series of slots that fit different size knives. Knife slots designed to be one long singular slot are more universal, as they fit different size knives. Designing butcher blocks with knife slots of different sizes may be a problem if you change your knife set in the future. Removable knife slots are also available and can be replaced with another piece when you update your knife set.

Countertop Design Trend: Wood Countertops and Apron Sinks

A current countertop design trend is pairing a wood countertop with an apron sink. This is a timeless combination that is popular in any style kitchen, especially in traditional and transitional kitchens.

Wood Countertop Design Trend Wood Countertops and Apron Sinks
Countertop Design Trend: Wood Countertops and Apron Sinks

The type of wood selected for the countertop varies, but the most popular species is Walnut. Various types of apron sinks are used, from a classic white to copper and patterned sinks.

When sealed with Grothouse exclusive Durata® permanent finish, the countertop is completely waterproof and safe from water damage. Durata® is available in different sheen levels, and the sheen level chosen varies based on the look the designer is striving to achieve.

Durata® Satin finish is a sheen level of 35 and has an appearance similar to common household furniture and dining tables. Satin sheen is the most popular selection. Durata® Semi-Gloss finish is a sheen level of 55 and is the best application for a kitchen countertop with a glossy finish. Durata® Matte finish is a sheen level of 10 and has an organic appearance similar to natural oil finishes.

How to Prepare for Valentine’s Day Dinner

Preparing Valentines Day Dinner can be stressful, but with the right food preparation surface and advice your meal can be a success.

How to Prepare for Valentines Day Dinner with Custom Wood Countertops Butcher Blocks
How to Prepare for Valentine’s Day Dinner

The first step in preparing Valentine’s day dinner is to select the recipes you want to make as an appetizer, entree and dessert. Choose something that you and your date will both enjoy and that you have confidence to make to ease stress.

Allrecipes provides plenty of appetizer inspiration, from crab-stuffed mushrooms to brie cheese fondue. Country Living offers over 40 romantic dinner recipe ideas like butternut squash ravioli, bucatini with winter pesto, pancetta and brussel sprouts linguine and more. The Food Network made a list of decadent chocolate desserts perfect for the holiday, like chocolate raspberry mousse candy cake and chocolate cheesecake.

Once you have selected the recipes you are going to make and purchase all of the ingredients, it is best to ensure that you have all of the tools you need for preparation. The most important tool is the surface that you will be using to prepare the food.

Grothouse solid wood butcher blocks are the surface preferred by top chefs at home and in restaurants. Butcher blocks are very hard surfaces and knives keep their edge far better because the blade slides between the wood fibers much like cutting into a firm brush. Grothouse Original Oil™ Finish is a heavy weight pure mineral oil used for lasting protection that is food safe and  hypoallergenic. It does not contain any Tung oils. You can prepare your meal with no concerns if your date has any nut allergies.

One of the best ways to prepare Valentines day dinner is by cooking together! It is a fun and romantic way to start the evening and enjoy each other’s company. Together, you can start the night by preparing a delicious meal and end it by enjoying it together!
