A huge congratulations to Krista Agapito of S&W Kitchens in Longwood, Florida for winning the Kitchens Over $225,000 Gold award! This open floor plan kitchen was a challenge due to the range of elements and working within the style of the 1980’s build.

Two Tier Kitchen Island Wood Countertops

The upper level of the kitchen island is a raised bar, composed of a three inch thick flat grain Walnut with Sapwood bar top. The character found in the wooden ceiling beams was complemented by distressing the bar top to level #4, which was then enhanced with a hand rubbed black glaze. Adding further character, the bar top features a Medium Roman Ogee edge profile.

A custom flat grain Walnut with sapwood backsplash was designed to connect the two tiers of the island. The design features a matching outlet cover. The backsplash was also distressed to level #4 and enhanced with a hand rubbed black glaze to match the upper level Walnut bar top.

The custom wood countertops and backsplash on the two tier kitchen island were the perfect addition to match the wooden ceiling beams and the wood fireplace mantel.

Breakfast Bar Tops

Breakfast bar tops are a brilliant way to add extra living space into the kitchen. They are the little perch where you start, and often finish, the day. Most designers choose a solid wood countertop for breakfast bars. Unlike stone and metal, wood is a naturally warm surface that is perfect for sipping morning coffee or enjoying ice cream.

Despite its name, a breakfast bar isn’t just a spot for morning coffee and a bowl of oatmeal. This handy feature, which can be as simple or ornate as your kitchen is, fulfills multiple roles: a cocktail party buffet, a kids’ homework station, extra dinner party seating and more.

Most breakfast bars are designed to sit higher than the kitchen countertops, but they have been designed to align with kitchen countertops as well as even sitting below them.

Walnut Breakfast Bar Top

The cooking and eating zones on this kitchen island designed by Todd Wiley of Tru Kitchens have been ingeniously divided up, thanks to different worktop materials. It’s a simple trick that makes it instantly feel less like a workaday kitchen and more like a multi-functional space. For the breakfast bar, a Walnut countertop was designed to fit perfectly around the other countertop material.

Designer Alicia Saso, AKBD, of Drury Design Kitchen & Bath Studio used Reclaimed Chestnut for this raised breakfast bar top. The wood has tons of ramshackle character and adds organic charm to the space.

Reclaimed Wood Kitchen Bar Tops

Reclaimed wood kitchen bar tops are artisan crafted to retain the salvaged wood’s visible knots, cracks and nicks, creating a truly unique design rich in textural details.

Reclaimed wood beams used for crafting custom kitchen bar tops
Reclaimed Wood Beams for Bar Tops

Reclaimed countertops are crafted from antique barn wood floor boards, beams and siding. Heavily distressed reclaimed wood tops are normally crafted from floor boards and siding. Reclaimed wood beams may have nail holes and insect scarring, but the aged character is less apparent than counters made from barn siding or flooring.

Custom Waterfall Wood Countertops

Custom Waterfall Wood Countertops, also known as Pastore™ counters, can be designed for use anywhere in the home. Most luxury designers choose to use them as a kitchen island, while some use them as a peninsula or bar top.

Designs with Waterfall Wood Countertops

Zebrawood is one of the most popular wood species designers use for waterfall countertops. This is because the wood grain naturally exhibits strikingly beautiful and exotic lines and striations. Karen Kassen, CMKBD, ASID, of Kitchens Unlimited designed a Zebrawood waterfall counter for the kitchen island, offering plenty of food prep space and room for seating.

Neena Corbin Kitchens Inc. designed a Zebrawood waterfall bar top to serve as a divider between an entry way and kitchen. The bar top adds warmth and visual interest to this otherwise white space.

Another popular wood choice for waterfall countertops is Walnut. For KBIS 2017, Wellborn Cabinet designed an American Black Walnut wood waterfall countertop for their modern display. Serving as a peninsula, the countertop also camouflages extra storage cabinets.

Paul Bentham of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath designed two Wenge waterfall wood tops, one for use as the bathroom vanity top and one for use as a bench seat. The mirror frame was also crafted out of Wenge wood for a uniform look in this contemporary master bath.

Brass Fixtures and Wood Countertops

Brass fixtures are an extremely popular kitchen trend showing up everywhere. Earlier this year, Houzz predicted that brass fixtures would gain popularity, and they were right. Combined with neutral components, like wood countertops, a new, elegant design is created that hasn’t been used for decades.

Wood in White Kitchen Designs

White kitchen designs have stood the test of time in beauty and popularity. However, reluctance to embrace a kitchen with white walls and cabinets is common due to the fear that the space will feel too cold. Wood countertops are a great way to create balance by adding warmth and texture into an otherwise all-white kitchen.
