About the Designer: Growing up overseas, Sarah developed a passion for historical preservation. She graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Interior Design. She wrote her undergraduate thesis on Color Therapy and strongly believes that living amidst great design can positively affect your subconscious and inspire you. After working over a decade in the design/build field, Sarah found herself drawn to the nuance and detail of custom millwork. In 2014, this passion led her to Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and  Bath. Her award-winning work has been featured in HOME, Traditional Home, Better Homes and Gardens, Chesapeake Home and The Washingtonian.

A Tip from Sarah: Be realistic about how you cook and what your storage needs are. Do an inventory of all your largest and smallest gadgets. You most likely have more than you think! Now is the time to efficiently find dedicated space for everything from that colander to the smallest measuring spoons. We have innovative ways to maximize even the smallest spaces if we accurately know what your needs are. A collaborative project is the best kind!

Additional Comments and Advice: We sourced a reclaimed beam from a barn in Pennsylvania and accented a custom hood with it to add character and warmth. Reclaimed wood also frames each of the doorways to extend the rough hewn wood texture. Soapstone and walnut wood was used on the countertops to add to the patina.

Other Items, Comments or Advice: This kitchen was a complete gut renovation. The previous kitchen did not complement the modern architecture of the house, and the new design brings in elements of architectural details consistent with the home. The Grothouse bar top was intended to be a focal point, while not feeling like a “heavy bar”. You can see through to the lower level granite countertop, which compliments the various levels within the house to give a sense of openness.

Checkerboard Butcher Block designed by Foster Custom Kitchens

Our Custom Wood Countertops Blog features the industry’s most talented and innovative designers throughout the United States and abroad. This featured kitchen includes a Wenge and Cherry Checkerboard Butcher Block designed by Andy Foster of Foster Custom Kitchens.

Checkerboard Butcher Block designed by Foster Custom Kitchens
Andy Foster of Foster Custom Kitchens

About the Designer: Andy Foster, an accomplished kitchen and bath designer, has been a cabinetmaker for over 40 years. He began woodworking as a hobby shortly after college, and it soon became a passion and a profession. In 1987, after over a decade of commercial woodworking in several venues, he founded Foster Custom Kitchens. What stands out about Andy is his knowledge of and experience in all phases of project development, including design, fabrication, installation, giving him a unique perspective of the process involved in creating a new or remodeled space.

A Tip from Andy: The downstairs of this home has Douglas fir walls, ceilings and beams. The owners chose beautiful rustic cherry for the surrounding cabinetry, and wanted a wooden countertop for their distressed, black, painted cherry island. We were concerned that adding a planked wood grain to the mix would be a little over the top. Choosing a contrasting, end-grain checkerboard pattern of Wenge and Cherry made the island “pop” and tied the painted and natural woods together.
