There are two types of Alder Wood Countertops species available at Grothouse: Knotty Alder and Superior Grade Alder. Alder is a common substitute for American Cherry in cabinets and Butcher Block Countertops. Both Alder species are light in color and can be manufactured in any of the three construction styles: Edge Grain, End Grain, and Flat Grain.

The heartwood and the sapwood are very similar and are not clearly distinct. Alder is generally sold in shorter lengths, so longer Alder Wood Countertops will usually contain butt joints. The color of Knotty Alder Wood Countertops range from a pale yellow to red brown. Knotty Alder is known for the knots that appear on the wood surface.
